London: William Pickering, 1845. Small Octavo. Aldine edition of the British poets. In 6 volumes. Portrait frontispiece in volume one. A collection of Chaucer's poetical works along with a memoir. An exceptionally nice set. Though all the volumes appear to have been rebacked at an early date and beautifully executed. (It would not have been noticeable except; the marbled endpapers did not match the marbled edges). A beautiful set, bound in full polished calf, spines flat, maroon and brown spine labels gilt, gilt ruled compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, all edges marbled, remarkably fresh and bright internally, with a few bumped corners. A lovely set.

London: John Murray, 1857. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo, full calf binding with marbled endpapers, with gilt titles and decoration on spine. Emblem of Trinity College in Oxford in gilt on front and back boards. From the collection of George Gilbert Ramsay of Glasgow University with his personal bookplate on the front pastedowns. Ramsay studied at Trinity College, Oxford and graduated with a First Class both in Classical Moderations and in the Final Classical School, before moving on to Glasgow University. All edges red. Vol. I xvii + 491pp, wear to spine, a couple of small cracks and some shelf wear, occasional pencil marks in text. These volumes are a continuation of Milman’s History of Christianity originally published in 3 volumes, of which we have a matching set.

London: Thomas Nelson and Sons. Ltd., 1964. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. Variously paginated. COMPLETE 9 VOLUME SET. Hardcovers in burgundy cloth, with title in gilt on front covers and spines. All volumes have moderate wear, including some heavy spotting (foxing) and rubbing. Some corners are bumped, some fore-edges are bumped. There is a dent in the spine (on the title) on Volume VI. All edges of text blocks are foxed, and the text has sporadic foxing. Interior is a bit musty. A sound set. Set includes the original receipt from Blackwell's in England, circa 1966.

All six volumes, including TWO FIRST EDITIONS and others in their first series of printings. Two Volumes octavo 19th century half calf with 5 faux raised bands gilt and tan title labels (tips slightly rubbed) xxxiv +412pp (ii)+432pp +[208]pp of index for both volumes. Titlepage of first volume is damp marked and the following three leaves of dedication and the last 8 leaves marginally so. The last two leaves also slightly browned but all paper supple and strong. There is sporadic & pale marking with volume 2 having a marginal ink spot to pp311 sl.offset to 310 and marginal damp to approx 10 leaves + the index. Ownership E.Kensington and note to pastedown that it was given my Mrs Bell in remembrance of her husband. *Madan was a loose-living lawyer when he attended a service by John Wesley, this led to his reform and he became a convert and took holy orders serving as chaplain of a Charity - Lock Hospital. Hand-coloured plates including costumes, professions & trades, with children, animals, coaching scene, ships/boats, boxing etc.. 2 VOLUMES gilt tan roan (edges worn/spine of vol.2 lacks top compartment and much of the raised bands of vol.2 are missing their leather covering) All edges marbled. Frontispiece + xc (which incl.titlepage) +72pp Vol.2 frontispiece + v (which includes title) +140pp + [4]pp of publisher's Spanish works. Book plate to pastedown with coat of arms of Earl of Portsmouth. Text in Spanish but plates all captioned only in English and the colouring is original and well done. Both text and plates are in clean condition, no writing no tears and with the tissue guards in place and very minimal foxing to a very few pages. The publisher, Ackermann, lists these books as being sold through his own establishments in Maxico, Columbia, Buenos Aires, Chile, Peru, & Guatemala these volumes were obviously written for the South American trade.
