DescriptionMassachusetts: BGI at St. Paul's School, 1913. First Edition. Original cloth. Very Good. 255pp. Organized in secret by nine young men at St. Paul's School in 1889, BGI grew by 1913 to have a club pin, regular meetings, &c. This book notes that each member was assessed 25 cents per week "to pay for the feeds and for the New York weeklies, Puck, Judge, and Life, which were bought every Wednesday in Concord." When the Vice-Rector discovered existence of the group, "the society met and disbanded." It was a fake disbandment because after three weeks, a "grip committee" was appointed to invent a secret handshake. [Shades of the Dead Poet Society?] The book has detailed information on rushing and pledging new members, the crew team, eventual recognition by the School, etc., etc. Included are biographies of all members to 1913 (many went on to Ivy League schools and professional careers), including 16 who had already died. Many surnames are familiar: Biddle, Ingersoll, Cadwalader, Nickerson, Bishop, et al. 7.75' X 5.25". Similar books from this booksellerFrom this bookseller's Education catalog.
