Horace Porter, at the time President Grant's secretary, tells the Secretary of War, William W. Belknap (1815-1892) distinguished himself as a brigadier general during the War of the Rebellion, and became Grant's Secretary of War in 1869. He was impeached in 1876, accused of taking money for an appointment, and he resigned. Horace Porter (1837-1921) was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at Chickamauga. A brigadier general, he served as aide de camp to Grant in 1864-65, stayed on as secretary to President Grant, then resigned in 1872. Later, he served as Ambassador to France, wrote the book "Campaigning with Grant" (1897). 9.25" x 5.5".
