Collected poems, letters and essays by Samuel Bowden, M.D. of Frome, Somersetshire, locally known as The Poet of Frome. The volume dedicated to Charles Boyle, Lord Viscount Dungarvan, and contains a long list of subscribers. Bowden was also a contributor to Gentlemen's Magazine and friend of the poet Elizabeth Rowe. Late 19th or early 20th century binding in full burgundy calf with lettering and subtle decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, attached ribbon bookmark, xii, (11), 390 pages. Some external rubbing, mainly along the joints and spine, good hinges, firm text block, clean pages with a name at the head of the title page, no other markings.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Small bookplate to front pastedown, related bibiliographic material pasted to endpapers. Shaw's very scarce first play, published in an edition, according to Laurence, of "not more than 500" copies. It was not an overwhelming bestseller. Shaw wrote to John Lane (quoted in Laurence) that the publisher "never advertised it even once; and the sale, which was only effected by great perseverance & determination on the part of the purchasers, was 150 copies." When the publisher retired in December 1897, they ceded to Shaw 194 sets of unbound sheets, which Shaw claimed to have commissioned Sotheran & Co. to bind for him. A lovely set of four volumes in two that likely published after the four volume first authorized American edition in olive cloth by the same publisher. In blue cloth and bright gilt. A little tanning to top and front page ends with a light stain/smudge to top page ends of first volume. A few tiny spots of wear to spine ends and corners, otherwise few marks. Some foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean interior, sharp corners and tight bindings.
