CIVIL WAR DEATH CERTIFICATE & INVENTORY: Alexandria, VA, January 14, 1863 Alexandria, VA, 1863. not bound. Very Good. Partly printed, accomplished by hand. U.S. General Hospital, Alexandria, VA, January 14, 1863. Attests that John Long, Private, Company M, 62 Reg't, Penna Vols, died at this Hospital, January 13th, 1863, of Gun Shot wound . Signed by John E. S[---], Surgeon, in charge of the hospital. Below that is an inventory of the effects of Private Long, who died at Mansion House Hospital, as above. His belongings amounted to one knapsack and two blankets. A bit of research reveals that Pvt Long died of wounds received at the Battle of Fredericksburg, a Union disaster, where 70 men of the 62nd were killed wounded, or missing. In the Diary of Mary Phinney, she provides insight into the scene at Mansion House Hospital, one of squalor, death, and horror. Ms. Phinney volunteered there as a nurse, serving under Dorothea Dix. She notes that Dix had warned her that "the surgeon in charge [Dr. S, she calls him] was determined to give her no foothold in any hospital where he reigned, and that I was to take no notice of anything that might occur, and was to make no complaint whatever might happen." The 62nd Regiment, Penna Volunteers, has come to be viewed as "a forgotten regiment of distinction." 9.75" x 8". (more information)
