One page, six paragraphs on "Savings Bond" stationery, in part: "Of course I will be glad to write the letter for Jerry Wald. I hope it's not too late." (Wald is remembered as the person who later leaked word of the Marilyn Monroe nude calendar to the press to publicize the movie "Clash by Night".) In this letter, Byrd continues: ".I have been back at the old stand for about three months now. Washington is as hectic as ever.I want to congratulate you for the organization you have built up in Hollywood. Very Good. Spine-tied signatures, unopened, untrimmed. 99pp. A paper label on the front is signed in ink: "John C. Ten Eyck, USS." John Conover Ten Eyck, senator, was born at Freehold, New Jersey in 1814. "Mr. Ten Eyck was a wig till 1856, when he joined the Republican party, and he was afterward chosen to the US Senate." (Appleton's Cyclopedia). This report on cotton consumption on the eve of civil war in America has sections on France, Switzerland, Bremen and Hamburg, Russia, Prussia, England, Austrian Empire, Sardinia, England, &c. 9.75" x 6". Handwritten Letter Signed (ALS) on behalf of Pres. U.S. Grant, calling Sec. of War William M. Belknap to the Executive Mansion Washington, DC: Not published, 1871. Original. not bound. Very Good. One page, sepia ink in a readable hand on Executive Mansion stationery, signed in full. Horace Porter, at the time President Grant's secretary, tells the Secretary of War, William W. Belknap: "The President desires me to say that he will be pleased to see you at the Executive Mansion as soon today as convenient." Belknap (1815-1892) distinguished himself as a brigadier general during the War of the Rebellion, and became Grant's Secretary of War in 1869. He was impeached in 1876, accused of taking money for an appointment, and he resigned. Horace Porter (1837-1921) was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at Chickamauga. A brigadier general, he served as aide de camp to Grant in 1864-65, stayed on as secretary to President Grant, then resigned in 1872. Later, he served as Ambassador to France, wrote the book "Campaigning with Grant" (1897). 9.25" x 5.5". (more information)

He mentions a Miss Coe "whose things were stored in Chicago," with whom he arrived back in Philadelphia at 1 A.M. Sunday, and for whom he is to sell some pieces on consignment. ".While Mr. duPont will be away August 7th, his Secretary, Mr. Otwell, will show us through the house at Winterthur.The rooms at Winterthur `have never been counted'. I don't know whether we shall see 100 of them, but I'll warrant that you will see enough to make you dizzy.," &c., &c. 11" x 8.5". (more information)
