Hartford: Published by class alumni, 1885. First Edition. Original cloth. Very Good. pp: iv, 156; 2 original photographs. Presentation copy to Hon. George G. Barclay of Philadelphia, a member of the class of 1830, inscribed and signed by Cone. Bound at the back are two original, sepiatone photographic images, each 4.5" x 8" with tissue guards. On pages 155-156 of the text, Cone explains: "Meeting at the Class Secretary's, September 30 and October 1, 1885. James B. Cone being somewhat of an amateur photographer, it was proposed that photographs of those present should be taken upon the piazza, and the two accompanying groups [portraits] were the result of the experiment. The group of gentlemen consists of Barnard with his luxuriant white beard, Loomis, Andrews, and Bissell, all standing, with Comstock in front of Bissell, and Cone next, the two last seated. The group of ladies consists of Mrs. Andrews, whose face is in profile, Mrs. Cone and Mrs. Bissell, all seated, with Miss Eva Comstock standing between the two last, and Mrs. James B. Cone behind Mrs. Andrews, the group being guarded on the right and left by Comstock and Cone standing, Comstock uncovered and Cone with hat on, both, however, being wholly unconscious that they were within the field of the camera." This is a very readable, first-person account of the early days at Yale, beginning with the author's matriculation in 1826. 9.5" x 5.75". (more information)
