BICYCLE PARADE AND HILL-CLIMBING CONTEST AT LANCASTER, PA
Lancaser, PA: D.B. Landis / Pluck Art Printery, 1897. not bound. Very Good. Printed on both sides (broadsheet). " . On Decoration Day, May 29th, 1897 . The Route . Hill-Climbing Contest ." Side two is devoted to the League of American Wheelmen, with a strong pitch for joining that group. The League was founded in 1880. Bicyclists, known then as "wheelmen," were challenged by rutted roads of gravel and dirt and faced antagonism from horsemen, wagon drivers, and pedestrians. In an effort to improve riding conditions so they might better enjoy their newly discovered sport, more than 100,000 cyclists from across the United States joined the League to advocate for paved roads. The success of the League in its first advocacy efforts ultimately led to our national highway system. When this broadsheet was issued in 1897, Pennsylvania already had a League membership of 15,000. " . Lancaster City has nearly 100 members. We want five times that number here. Join at once and Display Our Colors--the royal purple--in the coming parade. . Every lady joining the L.A.W. through me will be given 25 printed visiting cards . Join Now and be Happy ." 11.5" x 5.75". (more information)
