About the author

Edgar Berman, M.D. was a distinguished physician, a past president of MEDICO and former research associate and teacher at Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine. Dr. Berman, who worked with Tom Dooley in Loas as well as with Dr. Schweitzer in Gabon, is the first doctor to perform a plastic transplant (esophagal) on a human and the first to do a successful experimental heart transplant on a dog. He has held invitational fellowships to medical schools around the world and has served as consultant on various medical and help matters to the State Department and the White House. Dr. Berman, was a columnist for USA Today and author of The Solid Gold Stethoscope and Hubert, a biography of Hurbert Humphrey.
