About This Item

new york: aperture foundation, 1989. first paperback edition, 1989.

notorious photo book by the ineffable nan goldin (b. 1953). "the ballad of sexual dependency" book contains photographs exhibited by goldin in a 1985 slideshow of the same name. its title was adapted from a song in an opera by bertolt brecht. goldin's work documents the "post-stonewall" queer culture of the late 1970s and early 80s in new york city, as well as the drug culture of the bowery neighborhood, while also displaying intimate moments from her own life. goldin wrote, "the ballad of sexual dependency is the diary I let people read. the diary is my form of control over my life. it allows me to obsessively record every detail. it enables me to remember."

new york: aperture foundation. isbn: 9780893813390. 144 pages. 9x10". softcover. bound in pictorial paper wrappers. book condition: fine.
