About This Item
The power of Derek Jarman's visual imagination touched every one of his projects. In the various roles of painter, writer, stage designer,film-maker and gardener,he forged an intense and compelling view of the world in many different media.
Although Jarman's public image is that of film-maker,it was as a painter that he was trained, graduating from the Slade School of Art in the late 1960's to almost immediate acclaim, and exhibiting widely both in London and abroad. The singularity of his film-producing career never entirely obscured his importance as an artist and designer, and his imagination, generous and expansive, was focused through his painter's vision throughout his life.
'Derek Jarman: A Portrait' unravels the complexity and meaning of Jarman's vision by looking at all aspects of his creativity.Published here are not only examples of his late work, but also sculpture and paintings from all periods of his career,as well as dramatic photographs of stage sets and film stills, and moving images of the garden he created at Dungeness.
Specially commissioned essays explore the artistic, personal, and political dynamism which drove all his work. The exposure here of shared themes, ideas and influences provides fresh insights into Jarman's creative mind, and forces us to look again at one of the most intriguing and controversial personalities of our time.
Essay contributors include Gray Watson (course leader,MA Critical Studies in Visual Art and Theatre,Wimbledon School of Art),Michael O'Pray (Reader in Visual Theories,Univ of East London),Yolanda Sonnabend (artist and stage designer), Peter Snow (Professor of Theatre Design, Slade School of Art),Matt Cook (social hitorian),Stuart Morgan (lecturer in Contemporary Art,the Ruskin School of Art),James Cary Parkes (contributing editor,Gay Times),and Christopher Lloyd (gardening correspondent for 'Country Life' and the 'Guardian'.
