About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. First American edition. Hardcover. Near fine copy/fine. 8vo. Cloth-backed boards. Pp. x, 276. Translation of "Le colleur d'affiches" by Humphrey Hare. Michel del Castillo was born in Madrid but fled to France with his mother when the Spanish Civil War broke out. Later he was sent by the Nazi to a concentration camp in Germany which he only just managed to survive. After the War he was sent back to Spain and placed in an orphanage from which he escaped. He made his way to Paris, became a student and wrote his first great book, "Child of Our Times". This is a fictionalized account of his experiences.
