The representation of the nude figure was one of the most contraversial issues in Victorian art. This publication surveys the full range of Victorian representations of the nude, both male and female concentrating on painting, sculpture and drawing, but also exploring the artistic depiction of the "naked" body in other media, both "high" and "low", including photography, popular illustration, advertizing imagery and caricature, foregrounding issues of morality, sexuality and desire that remain relevant in the 21st century.

Alison Smith is a curator at Tate Britain and the author of The Victorian Nude: Sexuality, Morality, and Art. She lives in London, England.

First line

That the 'Victorian Nude' should seem an inherently contradictory notion owes much to the negative equation between the Victorian and moral restriction that emerged in the Edwardian era and which became entrenched during the twentieth century.
