Illustrations, Portraits, Music. Glossary. Bibliography (notes). Index. Henry Pleasnts lived for 90 per cent of the 20th century, dying in 2000. He began as a music critic in 1930 working for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. He served as the London music critic for the International Hearld Tribune for three decades near the end of the century. He served in the Second World War and later joined the Foreign Service (see The Invisible Government, p. 126 where he was reportedly the CIA Station Chief in Bonn) and lived for several months with the former Nazi intelligence official and father of the modenr German Federal Intelligence Service, Reinhard Gehlen. Pleasants maintained his music interests while keeping his day (and night) job with the CIA. He had a bylined artilce in the New York Herald Tribune on April 15, 1962 on Meyerbeer's Le Prophete (Ibid. ) The Great Singers is both a classic and regarded as a standard work on its topic.
