Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, 1871. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Volume 1: [5], 6 - 304 pages. Volume 2: [6], 7-302 pages. Floral design to the endpapers of both volumes. 1/4 and corners blue coloured cloth binding with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip, along with a small gilt coloured illustration of a flower. 3/4 marbled papered boards. Part of the British Authors series of books by this publisher: – Tauchnitz Edition Vol. 1161. A potboiler from the Victorian times. Volume 1: – softening of the backstrip edges with some fraying. The spine is cocked and rubbing of the book corners and fraying of the cloth is present – underlying board is visible. Flecking of the cloth of the boards with browning of the text block edges and pages. Pages 295 to 298 is loose – printing fault was not caught in the text block when sewn. Page 55 / 56 is somewhat creased as it was not trimmed flush with the rest of the text block. Previous owners name to the verso of the free front end paper. Volume 2: – Softening of the backstrip edges with frame. Slight cocking of the spine with rubbing of the book corners and bumping to the lower book corners. Underlying board is visible. Browning of the textblock edges and pages. Flecking of the cloth of the board. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
