About This Item

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1973. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Warmly inscribed by the author to her editor and friend Margaret McElderry on the fly leaf. 1973, First Edition. 310 pp. Hardcover, cloth-backed boards. A Very Good copy, Some discoloration (possibly from glue burning) to the covers and pastedown; foxing to upper and foredge text-blocks; slight lean to spine; clean and unmarked. This copy comes with 2 dust jackets: both show some foxing and soil, though one is much more discolored than the other (One rated as Good, the other Very Good). Originally from Ben Avon [near Pittsburgh, PA], Margaret McElderry (1912-2011) attended the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh School before moving to New York in the 1930s to work for the New York Public Library in the Children's Division under Anne Carroll Moore. After World War II, she became an editor of children's books at Harcourt Brace, eventually establishing her own imprint at Simon and Schuster. Miss McElderry was the first children's editor whose books won both the prestigious Newbery and Caldecott medals in the same year (1952). She was married to Storer Lunt (d. 1977), long-time publisher and eventual president of W.W. Norton.

Synopsis

An account of the author's experiences, observations, and thoughts during a three-month stay in a travel trailer on a remote bank of the Colorado River.
