About This Item
New York: St Martins, 1964. 242 pages. illus, maps, bibliog, index. On hearing the news of Napoleon's abdication in April 1814, an Englishwoman wrote in her journal: "I can scarce believe it possible that we are going to have peace and quiet, and an end to Bonaparte's horrors and dominion. I dread his starting up again." But, one year from that date saw Napoleon in supreme control, the Bourbon princelings humiliated and dethroned, and large and powerful armies at his command. For us, knowing the end of the story on the field of Waterloo, it is difficult to recapture the atmosphere of tension, terror, elation and despair, which prevailed at that time in Europe. . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
