Full calf, rebound with new spine and label with original blind embossed and ruled boards. Original boards rubbed and chipped have been repaired and laid on to new spine; endpapers and a few preliminary leaves with some minor foxing, otherwise leaves very crisp and clean and overall volume tight. A nice copy of this important work.. [2], 586 pp., [6]. 16mo. With the additional title page: engraved, "Io. Barclaii Argenis. Editio novissima," dated,1674. Page 348 mis-numbered as 312. John Barclay (1582-1621), Scots-born, wrote Argenis, in part based on political events on the Continent, in Rome in 1621. It was his best and most popular work, published in a number of editions and reprinted nearly fifty times in the seventeenth century as well as being translated in to ten languages; it no doubt had its influence on the English novels to follow.
