About This Item
Black & white illus. throughout. [13] leaves & ads. Square 4to, pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Aachen: 1969.
An early and important Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) exhibition catalogue, it is essentially a catalogue raisonné of his earliest works from the 60s. 122 of Richter's paintings are reproduced and all of them are listed in an exhibition check-list, with dimensions, and provenance information. With an introductory essay by the curator Klaus Honnef (b. 1939).
"In 1969, Klaus Honnef curated Gerhard Richter's first and pioneering retrospective, which was also his first solo exhibition in an institutional context. The exhibition encompassed works from 1962 to 1969, from the first blurred painting Table (1962), to his then current Townscapes (1969)...The accompanying catalogue is considered Richter's first catalogue raisonné and is today a sought-after collector's item...as Karin Thomas retrospectively noted: 'What is remarkable is the fact that this first museum presentation in Aachen accompanied by a catalogue, for which Honnef was responsible, set in motion Richter's international reputation, leading to both his Biennale nomination and participation in documenta 5...'"-Brigitte Jacobs van Renswou, "1968-1970: Gegenverkehr - Zentrum für aktuelle Kunst," Sediment 30: Klaus Honnef, From Conceptual Art to Photography, (2019), p. 20.
A near fine copy; lower cover a trifle scuffed.
