About This Item

New York: American Tract Society, 1833. Spine scuffed and moderately worn else Very Good condition. Light scattered foxing. Hinges starting to weaken, but still holding. Red leather spine label. Illustrated with 3 engravings: 1) View of the Parsonage in Cranbury, New Jersey, July, 1833, Occupying the ground where Brainerd preached to the Indians, 1746; 2)View of the Creek and Village of Crosswicks, New Jersey, July, 1833; 3) President Edwards' House, Northampton, Massachusetts, 1747. A biography of David Brainerd, 18th century missionary to the Indians of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Based primarily on Brainerd's own diary. This copy has two of the variations that Edward's bibliographer, Thomas Johnson, describes as being present "in some copies." Specifically: The title page imprint ends with "D. Fanshaw, Printer" and the final two lines on page 360 read: "Perpetuated by the Donations of Messrs. George Douglass, Charles Starr and William A. Hallock, of New York." As with all copies of the American Tract Society's LIFE OF BRAINERD, there is no printed date. Johnson states the book was first published in 1833, but there is no way to know exactly when this copy was issued. This copy does have the handwritten date, 1839, below the owner's signature on a preliminary blank page. Johnson 159 [THE PRINTED WRITINGS OF JONATHAN EDWARDS, 1703-1758, A BIBLIOGRAPHY].
