Frontispiece, Xxiv, Folding Plan Of Worcester Castle, Errta Slip, 624 Pp Including Full Index At End. 9 1/8" Tall. Old Half-Morocco Gift Binding Over Watered Boards, Matching Endpapers, Spine With Five Bands, Title And Author In One Compartment, Elaborate Gilt Decoration In Other Compartments. Binding Somewhat Worn But Recently Professional Refreshed With Careful Repairs At Corners, Hinges Sound, No Cracking To Endpapers. Top Edge Of Page Block Is Gilt. Presentation Inscription To Mining Engineer Edward Aston Allport, Who Went Abroad After A Scandalous Divorce And Then Second Marriage To His Sister's Wife. Name Stamp Of William Ellery Hale Of Chicago, And Ownership Signature Of Astronomer George Ellery Hale Dated March 1915. Contents Otherwise Very Clean, No Marks, But Some Foxing To Margins Of Frontispiece. Per Wikipedia, Edward Somerset, 2Nd Marquess Of Worcester ( 1602 Or 1603 - 1667), Styled Lord Herbert Of Raglan From 1628 To 1644, Was An English Nobleman Involved In Royalist Politics, And An Inventor. While Earl Of Glamorgan, He Was Sent By Charles I To Negotiate A Peace Treaty And Alliance With The Leadership Of The Catholic Irish Confederacy. He Enjoyed Some Success, But The Agreement Quickly Broke Down. He Then Joined The Confederates, And Was Appointed The Commander Of Their Munster Army. In 1655 He Wrote The Century Of Inventions, Detailing More Than 100 Inventions, Including A Device That Would Have Been One Of The Earliest Steam Engines.
