Description

Boston: Richard G. Badger, 1906. First Edition. Octavo (20cm); dark green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind, in glassine dustwrapper; 62pp. Boards show minor wear and scuffs; two small gouges on front, corresponding damage to glassine; glassine chipped and toned, torn on front fore edge. Top edge gilt; mild foxing throughout text; several printer's cutting errors (some leaves not separated fully, others rough cut). Very Good or Better. Dr. Henry Nehemiah Dodge was a venerable New Jersey dentist and religious scholar, as well as a poet; he published four books of verse before his death in 1937. In his Mystery of the West, Dodge lauds the arrival and patriotic efforts of America's early explorers and immigrant communities (a sort of Edwardian "Coming to America"). While his sentiment was praised, the work was sometimes criticized for eliding the challenging, often crushing realities for many immigrants upon arrival in the States.
