About This Item
London.: John Murray, London., 1948 1st edn. Hardback without dustwrapper. 8vo. x, pp264 incl. index. 12 b/w plates incl. frontis. (one loose). Orig. turquoise buckram, faded silver titled to faded spine. Page edges browning, slightly cocked. Otherwise totally sound copy. An extraordinary document, where text is admirably mixed with the letters to make a fluid whole, which delineates the tragic & ultimately harmful marriage of Ruskin to Effie Grey, which was unconsummated and later annulled, her escape and far later saving of another young woman from the grasps of the fantasist, her marriage to Millais and vast family spawned therefrom and the sad descent into madness of Ruskin. Compiled by Effie Grey's grandson this is a masterly piece of revisionist correction of a great deal of falsehood written about her ghastly first marriage. I couldn't put it down!
