About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux , 1965. Near fine (two slightly bumped corners, otherwise fine) in very good dust jacket (price-clipped, foxing along inside top edge and inside folds). Caldwell, a white southerner, writes of injustice toward African Americans. The title refers to an African American childhood friend from whom he was separated by the prejudices of adults. Published at the height of the civil rights movement, shortly after the March on Washington and the 1964 Civils Rights Act, and about the same time as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Very interesting to see how a perceptive white southerner could see how the barriers to true equality were going to continue to exist after these mid-1960s accomplishments.. 1st printing. Hard Cover.
