The Ottoman Empire met the art of photography shortly after its discovery. The first images were taken by traveling photographers reaching the East in the 1840s, then local studios began to open on the Grande Rue de Pera in the 1850s. Sébah&Joaillier was a photography studio with its origins dating back to 1857 in the Tomtom neighborhood of the Pera district. The studio, founded by Pascal Sébah, experienced its golden age during its partnership with Polycarpe Joaillier. It soon became the most important photography studio within the Ottoman Empire turning into a worldwide brand, by introducing to the world the attractive mysterious oriental cityscapes, buildings, street types and many outdoor beauties and was honored with several awards in international fairs. The magnificent heritage of the Sébah&Joaillier Photography Studio is brought to light in this book thanks to the collection of Fabrizio Casaretto, grandson of the Joaillier family.
