About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st reprint.[True 1st edn was Ian Allan,1981; reprinted in 1989 and 1993 with this publisher.] NMINT/NMINT. Colour photographic dw/dj,design repeated to laminated glossy boards.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st reprint,112pp includes preface,an introduction,b/w map eps, profuse b/w photographs and a biblio. In 1876 the first passenger train ran on the Midland Railway's Settle-Carlisle line.Driving across the Dales and through the Pennines it helped give the Midland access to Scotland and enabled the company to compete against the LNWR and the East Coast partners.A magnificent feat of engineering, the line passes through some of the bleakest landscapes in Britain and it is this struggle against the restraints imposed by the topography of the countryside which makes the railway so fascinating. Respected photographer T.G. Flinders has collected a remarkable selection of over 200 photographs which take the reader over the line in five pictorial stages. While the emphasis is on the current scene, the book also contains flashbacks to the days of steam and a look at the 'new steam era' of British Rail's 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'.With such sights as the Three Peaks - Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent - in the background, the Settle-Carlisle route is particularly photogenic, and all enthusiasts will appreciate this pictorial survey. This popular book was reprinted in 1989 due to public demand. The major part of the text of this volume was written in 1979 and the intervening years have seen the publication of 'The Settle & Carlisle Route Revisited' (Ian Allan,1985) which chronicled the continuing run-down of the line.May,1988,' in the 113th year of the line's often precarious existence was marked by David Mitchell's announcement to a shocked House of Commons that if a private buyer could not be found by the end of the year then the Minister was minded to consent to BR's request to close the line. The author whilst delighted the book has been reprinted,is saddened to see that virtually every page now shows scenes which even now cannot be repeated. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
