Map illustrated and pages, both different, the front endpaper shows Eastern Europe in 1683, Boundary of Ottoman Empire; rear end page shows the Danube in 1683. The text is illustrated with contemporary black-and-white illustrations. Yellow / green coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. ''The Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683 is one of the turning-points of European history. <snip> So great was the shock of this irruption that countries normally jealous and hostile sank their differences in a common effort to drive back the armies of his lamb and their still more terrible allies, the savage Tatar tribesman who were burning, looting and killing all over the peaceful countryside at the heart of Europe.
