About This Item
London: by E. C. for Henry Eversden, 1661, 1661. FIRST EDITION. 1 vol., 6-3/16" x 4-1/4", (xv)250pp.(iii), complete, title-page printed in red and black, bound in somewhat recent full mottled brown calf over cords, spine gilt paneled and lettered, hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, mild toning to pages, minor damp stain to gutter of the first few pages, engraved bookplate of Christ's College Cambridge to verso of title-page. ESTC R3090; Wing G834. A good copy of Glanvill's first book, arguing for tolerance and scientific method in favor of dogmatism, the scholastic method, and Aristotelian philosophy. Elsewhere Glanvill ventures that in "ages hence, a voyage to the southern unknown tracts, yea possibly the Moon, will not be more strange than one to America".
