About This Item
Edinburgh: John Bell and J. Murray, 1778. First edition, 4to, pp. xx, 431, [2]; contemporary sprinkled calf, red and green morocco labels on gilt decorated spine, edges stained yellow; upper joint starting, bottom of spine with a chip glued back on, fore-edge of labels also reglued; prelims a little browned, else internally fine and overall very good. "His most important treatise, A View of Society in Europe, was published in 1778 ... In this dissertation the author followed the guidance of Montesquieu, whom alone, such was his vanity, he recognized as his superior. It was confined to the early and medieval ages, and its learning was not sufficiently deep to give it a permanent authority" (DNB). Goldsmith 11665; Kress B-159.
