n.p.: n.p., 1944. Fine.. Wonderfully detailed finished pencil drawing by Tenggren that appears (in reduced size) on page 87 of TENGGREN'S STORY BOOK (1944). Pictured is the emperor as child, seated at a table and contemplating an egg. Because the child cut his finger while breaking an egg, his father declared that thereafter, all eggs had to be opened at the smaller end, beginning a rebellion and a war with the empire of Blefuscu. The son is drawn very much like one of the dwarves in Snow White. A great image. 5.5'' x 6'' (image); 15'' x 15'' (frame). Single sheet, matted and framed. Not examined outside frame.

Illustrated with reproductions of color paintings by Tenggren, a Swedish-American artist who remains best-known for his work on the Walt Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. One of the less-common Tenggren books in the first edition (it was reissued in 2003). A Giant Golden Book, 10-1/4 by 13 inches; 96 pages. First edition (code A 395395 on the front pastedown). A very good copy in laminated decorated paper-covered boards. The top of the spine is just beginning to crack, with loss of about one inch of the lamination at the top of the spine, and an early price sticker on the front pastedown. This copy has a previous owner's name on the blank opposite the title page; Tenggram signed the book below the name. Very uncommon signed.

A scarce children's title and one of Tenggren's most important works. Distribution was probably tempered coming out, as it did, on the eve of the Great Depression in an upscale, deluxe format. Great book, bad timing. A dozen linked fantasy tales, illustrated with six large, mounted color plates by Tenggren. 18 full page b&w drawings, plus chapter heads, title page illustration, contents page, chapter headings and tailpieces, all very much in the style of Tenggren (and his inspiration, John Bauer) by Carl Emil Wehde. Tips gently rounded and rubbed, spine top and bottom very lightly worn, covers bright. Near fine to fine copy without previous owner's marks. The only other work we find by Wehde is Three Little Pigs, McLoughlin Brothers, 1931. But we find him a very competent illustrator with a fine sense of design. The dustwrapper is rough along the edges and a little age-soiled, else is near fine. Illustrated with eight full page full color plates as well as black and white in-text illustrations by Gustaf Tenggren. Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baroness d'Aulnoy,also known as Countess d'Aulnoy, was known for her literary fairy tales. When she termed her works 'contes de fées' (fairy tales), she originated the term that is now generally used for the genre. Gustaf Tenggren was a Swedish-American illustrator known for his Rackham-esque fairy-tale style. He was a chief illustrator for Walt Disney in the late 1930s, whose work appeared in films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. .
