New Brunswick, NJ: Printed and sold by Ambrose Walker, 1808. Hardcover. Good + condition. Unusual New Brunswick imprint; this work first published in Boston in 1804. A book of conduct, sometimes attributed to Louis Antoine de Caraccioli, translated by Samuel Glasse and very popular in America. Consists of a series of "conferences", most addressed to two sons, but with one addressed to a daughter, "Your sex requires the utmost circumspection; what among men is reputed a venial fault is an absolute crime with us" (p121). Dr. Gregory's 'Legacy' was written to record his wife's views on female education after her death. It too was a best seller; Gregory recommends that women hide any education they might have, as it might damage their marriage prospects. 8vo, [ix], 384 pp. Period brown gilt calf, gilt title on red spine label. Period manuscript owner signature, Julia A. Jones, Troy NY at title page. Boards slightly rubbed at edges; a bit of toning, scattered fox spotting. OCLC: 6689713.
