Description:
Bangalore, India, 1877. Very good condition. Four large albumen photographs with pen and ink decoration surrounding them, of the famed Victorian light cavalry regiment known as the Hussars, in India. The albumen photographs on the front are: a portrait of three relaxed officers lounging in uniform on the terrace of a colonial building in India, captioned in ink in a period hand, "McBurn, Capt. Malone, and Hon.ble H. G. Gough". The two men at the left wear small round caps; the man at the right sits with one leg flung over the arm of his chair. The second image is a large group portrait of the regiment in civilian dress, including wives and Indian servants, at the colonnaded facade of an imposing building, captioned "XIV Hussars Group, Mess House, Bangalore, 1877". Below this image, an unidentified member of the regiment and his wife are portrayed in a charming pen and ink cartoon of the couple in a row boat, with a clipped photo of their faces pasted in. On the verso, an impressive private…

Description:
India, 1922. Ephemera. Fine. A two page typewritten letter from Rev. and Mrs. Stanley Jones, missionaries in India, to Mrs. Tripner. The letter describes how a flood had ruined grain, medicine, books, furniture, buildings. School continues in any available dry spot, and the benefit that street children gain from reading and writing, general education, cleanliness etc. Eli Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was an American Methodist Christian missionary, theologian, and author. He is remembered chiefly for his inter religious lectures to the educated classes in India, thousands of which were held across the Indian subcontinent during the first decades of the 20th century. He is sometimes considered the "Billy Graham of India." His seminal work, The Christ of the Indian Road, sold more than a million copies worldwide after its publication in 1925. (Wikipedia). The letter is written by his wife and fellow missionary, Mabel Lossing Jones. Mrs. Jones explains that her husband is on an extended trip to China…

Description:
1845. Very good overall. Reverse painting on mica of a distinctive brown and yellow bird perched on a bough, a landscape with pond in the background. "Mica is a transparent mineral composed of complex mixtures of potassium silicates and often used in the mid-19th century by Indian artists, typically in standard sets for the colonial tourist market. Mica is formed between strata of granite and the transparency of the material is a result of the heat and pressure created between the layers of rock during formation. Mica consists of many interlocking platelets, resulting in a laminar structure which can be split easily into thin sheets. Mica presents many problems as a support for painting on due to the smooth surface as this provides very little key for the paint to adhere to. Popular subject matter included Hindu gods and goddesses, religious events, trades-people and flora and fauna of the sub-continent." (Victoria and Albert Museum, London). Approx 4 1/2 by 6 1/2.
