Collection contains multiples of his honorable discharge and reenlistment papers, a photo of Max in 1944 in honor of his 41st birthday; a handwritten letter to Max Jr. dated 1944 from Italy "in the Spaghetti Boot." 4pp letter 5 1/4 x 6 3/4" with envelope; vaccination record; 10 (8 3/4 x 7 1/2") b&w photos of the Mt. The circular lists 10 directions for sending letters, including one-page only and of a strictly personal character, typed or clearly written. "... any person may send a letter to a prisoner of war In Japanese hands, but in view of difficulties of transmission it is urged that, until information is received from the Japanese as to prisoners of war and their places of internment, letters should be sent only once a month, and by close relatives only." The Central Red Cross Bureau, based in Melbourne, was the go through organization for such mail. Sir Basil Edward Embry (1902 - 1977) was the Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command from 1949 to 1953. He too was shot down over Germany, captured by the German army, escaped and evaded recapture for two months in occupied France, before getting home to England via Spain and Gibraltar. 8vo, 309pp, maps.
