A fine original mezzotint line engraved plate printed in colour and hand finished; this is plate No. 242 from Weinmann's magnum opus "Phytanthoza Iconographia" published in Regensburg (Germany) between the years 1734 & 1745 Overall plate size: 25 x 40cm. (9.75 x 15.75 inches). Most of this series was printed in colour and hand finished, and is one of the earliest examples of colour printing. It is also the first published collection to include the work of George Ehret, one of the most important botanical artists of the 18th century, some plates also by N. Authored by distinguished American botanist/taxonomist Philip A Munz. Sixty-two pages of text in Portuguese accompanied by 51 finely detailed full-page illustration plates, forty-nine in b&w and two in color, covering 5 genera and 45 species of Onagraceae. Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society.
