Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift. Published by Oxford University Press, New York, 1977. Introduction by Jacques Barzun, illustrated by Warren Chappell. 8vo up to 9½" tall., 300pp., illustrated in duotone. Quarter dark brown over beige boards with gilt spine titles; pictorial of man and a horse in brown to front board; brown endpapers. Volume is in fine, unmarked condition; dustjacket has very light shelf wear and a small chip to tail edge.
Warren Chappell (1904–1991) was a graphic artist, book illustrator, and typographer.
Synopsis
Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), officially Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships, is a novel by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift that is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary sub-genre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became tremendously popular as soon as it was published.
