This revised and up-dated in-depth history traces the experience of the Church of Ireland from the 1690s to 2001. Alan Acheson assesses the ""English interest"" in the Church and its role in Irish society and its relations with other denominations. He examines the great revival around the Act of Union (1800), the influences of reforming bishops, the evangelical revival, the Church's heroic role in recurrent famine crises and the Great Famine and its philanthropic activities. The book concludes with discussions of the Church's significant role in the world-wide Anglican Communion and its engagement with ecumenism. Alan Acheson was first elected to the General Synod of the Church of Ireland in 1970 and has served on many of its committees.
