The author Cobbs was the state's principal witness against Birmingham church bomber Robert Chambliss, her uncle. Because of this book and the additional evidence that it presented, the case was reopened and additional convictions obtained. Her story of conflict between her family ties and her concern for a greater good is a moving one. Only at the end of the book do you learn of Petric Smith's true identity. . 1st Edition. Hard Cover.

Written at the time of McCarthy's greatest influence, chapters include "The Real Issue: How to Combat Communism Responsibly." A reasonably balanced appraisal (Rorty was a Taft Republican, Decter a Stevenson Democrat) written at a difficult period in our nation's history. Published after the Rosenbergs' executions, this pamphlet includes a series of dedicated pages acknowledging different groups and individuals' efforts for clemency. It includes a poem from W.E.B.DuBois; a page honoring Dr. Harold C. Urey, a Nobel Prize winner and one of the top atomic scientists for the US. Other pages include the prologue to John Wexley's forthcoming book; the Rosenbergs' last will and testament; a last letter to the children; an appeal for justice for Morton Sobell who was also detained in the case and jailed at Alcatraz. The trial of Dr. Benjamin Spock along with William Sloane Coffin, Jr., Mitchell Goodman, Michael Ferber, and Marcus Raskin in 1968 for "conspiracy to counsel, aid and abet violations of the Selective Service Act"--in other words, helping people avoid the draft during the Vietnam War--is Mitford's subject in her first book after "The American Way of Death." 272 pages including an appendix. The book went to press in May 1969 before the outcome of the appeal, and the back of the dust jacket contains Mitford's update of July 1969. A real landmark in American jurisprudence and a relevant slice of the history of American dissent. It was, after all, the draft that stirred up the opposition to the war in Vietnam.. 1st Edition.
