New York: The Cortes Society, 1917. Hardcover. First issue of this translation, a handsome small hardbound, buff boards bearing two-color title-label under brown buckram backstrip, also has a [spine]-title label. Find a small but very bad impact dent to tail of rear cover, causing a deep fissure in the buckram'd cover and severe wrinkles in the latter half of all text-leaf margins. Corner-tips are also damaged. Item looks good in a general way, physically tight and square, but within has another sort of damage: textblock was left untrimmed and signatures unopened, and there are long stretches "opened" by someone confidently ignorant of the how-to-to-its of opening connected leaves (use the flat of a table knife, close the book upon it, and pray to Caxton). Finally, both labels are dim, and the spine label also scuffed. Presentable, but a fair to good copy only. Documents and Narratives concerning the discovery and conquest of Latin America. Chicago: W.D. Boyce Company, 1928. Hardcover. xviii, 125p., presswork on semi-glazed alkaline paperstock, profusely illustrated with b&w photos taken on-site in unmapped New Guinea, hardbound in black cloth boards titled and ruled in gilt. Rear endsheets are doublespread maps in colors. Front endsheets appear to be constituted of a cancel onlay that emphasizes the memorial function of this issue; p.125 may also be a cancel/insert. Condition: several inches of the gold title-border have flaked away, there is edgewear of extremities, but hinges are good, the text clean and unmarked. A good toi very good copy. The Boyce company advertises other items it publishes, even on this title page itself, namely "The Blade and Leger, Extra Money, Movie Romances, Illustrated South America".. &c &c. The probable triviality of these other books need not impugn the item in hand, which is quite interesting; the deceased had a knack for people of every sort. He died young (and sorely missed) of an embolism.

Anthropological study of the issue of hostility and violence between primitive peoples, focussed on the Dugum Dani of New Guinea. Includes texts of songs of the people. A 10x7 inch softbound in plain printed buff wraps, in nice condition pace a faint splash stain to spine panel: sound and square, otherwise clean and entirely unmarked, a nearly as-new copy. The Viking Fund Publications in Anthropology Number 49, edited by Colin Trumball.

Stockholm: The Ethnographical Museum of Sweden, 1948. Hardcover. xv, 220p., xi (folded doublespread maps) followed by a single gargantuan map in colors, folded neatly in a rear pocket. Text-paper and maps are on glazed alkaline stock, while endsheets and linen boards are a bit toned with some foxing to spine panel. Hardbound in 12x9 inch raw linen boards with leather spine labels, one red one green, titled and ruled gilt, very sharp except for the sprinkle of foxing, copy #605 of 700. One of the terminal doublespreads has is creased. A good to very good copy; rear pocket bears a tiny tear but the master map appears untouched. We are offering a sound clean unmarked copy. New series, publication no. 9.

Menasha, Wisconsin: American Anthropological Association, 1933. Paperback. 77p., wraps, partly unopened, very good condition. Memoirs of the American Anthropological Association, #40. Ethnography of a tribe in Manchuria by the Mongol specialist Lattimore, including a glossary of terms. Lattimore, an American raised in China, was later to become an advisor to Chiang Kai-shek, and in the 1950s was accused by McCarthy of being a "top Soviet agent.

New York: Blue Ribbon Books, Inc, 1930. Hardcover. Reprint of the Morrow first issue: x, 372p., frontis, introduction, appendices, map, glossary, photos on glazed inserted stock. Hardbound in green cloth boards lettered black, lacks the dust jacket. Mild external signs of age and handling, quite sound and clean within and marked only by an inked ownership tracing to Stanford University.

Cambridge: Peabody Museum, 1917. Paperback. [xvii], 206p., errata slip tipped in, softbound in plain printed brown yapp-edged wraps, the overlapped margins ragged with a corner-tip loss. Else sound, and clean and unmarked, a very good copy, if somewhat uglified by the irregular marginal damage. Papers of Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Vol VII. "This Paper is the result of work carried on by Mr. Means as a graduate student during the years 1915-1917. It consists mainly of translations of early Spanish books and manuscripts" - from opening "Note" - translation of the "crabbed" eccentric handwriting of the period nearly as difficult as translating from pictograph material.

First American edition: 256p., illustrated with numerous photo sections, mostly b&w with several dynamite color shots, Hardbound in red cloth boards lettered orange and green and enclosed in the dust jacket. Book itself bears scattered spots of foxing to fore-edge, and the jacket is a little edgeworn with short tears at the head-rim, an otherwise perfectly sound copy, clean and unmarked. Contains several of the finest colorphoto portraits of indigenous people this cataloguer has seen (while going over a large collection of such books).
