.
Bizarre & violent tale of a (White) European who becomes King of the Zulu, a sideshow act…told in pictures & rhyming verse.
Hansen, Peter. Zulukafferhövdingen Peter Hansens Liv Og Levnet. København: Gandrup & Co, 1874. 32 leaves, printed on recto side only, illustrated; bound in cloth. Danish language.
A graphically illustrated book told in verse form. The life and fantastic (mis)adventures of a well-to-do young man who finds his world turned upside down when he's conscripted to the French Foreign Legion and sent to fight in Africa; here he kills his share of enemies before being captured by Arabs, who torment him and tie him to a giraffe to be chased and ultimately devoured by lions, only to find himself rescued by a Zulu chief, who "paints" him with brown root so that he presents as a Zulu. No longer "white" Hansen established himself as a leader, selling what appears to be an elixir of some kind, and returns to Europe where he winds-up performing as Chief of the Zulus in a traveling side show. The book ends with him savagely beating and dismembering his earlier wife's new husband in their middleclass home, with the final leaf showing a classic family mourning pose around an engraved urn.
We admit to having difficulty translating, as good as Google is, so we may not have the story exactly right-but whatever it is it is certainly rare. OCLC shows 2 locations, both in Denmark. We found no copies on the market in any format, nor any historical record, only the publisher's notices for the title in book annuals during the 1870's & 1880's.
Please see images. Inquiries welcome. Thank you.

Description:
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. This is a first edition of Eleanor Roosevelts first book, Its Up to the Women. Eleanor published this book in 1933, concurrent with the first inauguration of her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in part as a declaration of her intended transformative approach to the role of First Lady. This example is a strikingly bright and clean, fine example in a very good minus dust jacket. The light teal cloth binding printed in dark teal and black is beautifully clean, square, and tight with sharp corners and no appreciable wear. The contents are likewise remarkably clean, free of spotting or previous ownership marks. The deckled fore and bottom edges are likewise immaculate. The top edge shows only a trivial hint of shelf dust. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original $1.25 front flap price, and substantially complete, with only fractional loss to the joint and flap fold extremities. The jacket is also notably clean. There is a…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

In the Moluccas, he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus; correspondingly, the test is divided into two sections.
