America noviter delineata: A highly decorative map of America

by HONDIUS, HENRICUS

  • Used

Hand coloured engraved map, decorative title cartouche, ocean embellished with seven sailing ships and 3 sea monsters, central vertical fold, English text on verso, wide margins, reinforced along fold, overall size 495 x 590mm, Amsterdam, 1631 [c.1633]

A highly decorative map of America, with inset maps of Greenland and the South Pole. The decorative vignettes surrounding the map have been removed by Henricus shortly after his fathers death in 1629. This was probably to adapt the former map to an atlas format while retaining the insets. Hondius' map follows the general geography of Willem Blaeu's version published in 1608 and 1617. Mapmakers in the Age of Discovery competed constantly to have the most accurate maps using the latest information. This resulted in the frequent reuse and modification of plates to include reports from the most recent voyages and data from competing publications.

California has been established as a peninsular, with the North West coast of America stretching out towards Asia. Both coasts are packed with place names. The Great Lakes are missing, along with Long Island. South America is bloated and similar in shape to Africa. On the verso a 2 page description of America recounts Columbus' discovery of America, Magellan's circumnavigation, the origin of Native Americans in Asia and a host of other interesting details on America. A rare English text edition of this example of Dutch cartography in the 17th century.

New York: Sterling Publishing House, Co., Inc, 1960. Unbound. Very Good. Portfolio. Color facsimiles of 36 historical maps. Each map measures approximately 12" x 9", printed on 17" x 11½" paper with descriptive text in the left margin. Housed with a title page sheet and unprinted top sheet in a four-fold chemise. Unprinted topsheet sunned at the edges, first two leaves with some very light toning and a couple of tiny corner creases; the maps are otherwise bright and fine. The chemise is good only with toning, wear, and soil, and a 1" creased tear on the cover panel. A nice production, and the chemise has done its job, keeping the maps bright and fresh.

Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
