Quixote Press, 1969. First Edition. Paperback. Used - Very Good. CHARLES BUKOWSKI'S PERSONAL COPY, with a superb inscription, a great drawing, and Bukowski's markings and corrections to text (many of the corrections are initialled by Bukowski as 'C.B.'). The book is inscribed on title page to James ('Jimmy') Pitts, an important friend of Bukowski's in this era: 'For James Pitts - Funny, found I only had 2 copies left, so sending you one - (Beat-up) which I read from at poetry reading in some lousy coffee house in Venice. Made $55 which beats picking bananas. Hold in, Charles Bukowski Sept. 26th. 1970.' P.S. Now found I have a couple more copies but I've already signed this one. O.K. B.' On page 11 Bukowski has added a half-page drawing (following the essay by Rich Mangelsdorff) depicting himself as Christ crucified on the Cross ('BUK' helpfully written on his chest), with three jeering figures and an inscription reading 'This guy says I'm finished. Ah well.' This unique copy has Bukowski's ink and pencil corrections, and markings of poems to read at the Venice reading (some of those in pencil later erased). His markings and corrections appear on 16 pages, and he has initialled (as 'C.B.') his corrections on 5 pages. Fellow writer Jimmy Pitts was an important early correspondent of Bukowski's. Bukowski's letters to Pitts, long missing, have recently resurfaced, and provide important new light on Bukowski's low and high points at the moment where his writing career and life went from struggle to success. His association with Pitts was significant. Original orange printed wraps (some fading and wear to edges). [4],80 pages. Krumhansl 30 - one of about 400 copies issued.

Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Zane Grey to noted singer & actor Rudy Vallee, radio host, one of America's first teen idols: 'To Rudy Vallee In appreciation of a pleasant night at the Grove and your great show. Madison, WI: Quixote Press, 1969. First Edition. An important, early compilation of Bukowski's work, culled from the pages of little magazines and early publications; in addition to a selection of Bukowski's poetry, the Sampler contains an introduction by Douglas Blazek and appreciations by Al Purdy, Steve Richmond, William Wantling, and Don Cauble, et al. When he comes to describe Jerusalem he makes this remarkable statement; Do not set out...resolved to make discoveries. There is not a foot of ground that has not been already scrutinized by a thousand eyes as keen as yours, and the old adage, "If new not true," may be applied to Jerusalem and her monuments with more propriety than to any other place on earth...." - Introduction from Poet and Peasant: A…
