Description:
1644 Francis Bacon Sermones Fideles Essays Elzevir Economics Science Crime LAW

"Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly."
― Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.

An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Bacon's "Sermones fideles". "Sermones fideles" is the title of the work as a whole, but it contains four other works that come from 'The Essays'. Bacon discusses politics, economics, ethics, crime, law, and science all through the lens of philosophy. This work was translated from his 'Essays' which was printed earlier in English.

Description:
1724 French Essays of Michel Montaigne France Renaissance Philosophy Humanism

"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself."
― Michel de Montaigne, Essays

First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller,
"the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence".
Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the 'Essays,' that "Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Contracts are the most informative records we have about the nature of commissioning prestigious works of art in the Renaissance. This book provides a framework for interpreting these important documents by surveying a body of contracts and related records concerning altarpieces and frescoes painted in Italy from the early fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuries.
