New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1979. Very good.. Signed first printing of the toy theatre based upon "the sets and costumes of the Broadway production of the play designed by Edward Gorey." Gorey adored Broadway, attending in his trademark fur coat and sneakers: when he was finally invited to design the set and costumes for a play, it was a nightmare come true. His costumes earned him a Tony in 1978. The book contains three different sets, including "furnishings which can easily be cut out and assembled, along with the play's eight characters and appropriately atmospheric details" - including bats and a boudoir rug. 15'' x 10''. Original spiral-bound black-and-white stiff card wrappers with ornamental border by Gorey. Illustrated by Gorey in black and white throughout (all elements uncut). Printed on one side only. Signed by Gorey on title page, crossing out his printed name. Faint toning and bumping, a bit of wear to rear wrapper with short (less than 1'') separation from spiral binding. A nice copy.

1765 Siege of Calais French Play by de Belloy Seven Years War France PatriotismPierre-Laurent de Belloy was an 18th-century French playwright who was relative popular during his lifetime. His popularity was rooted in his recurring themes of patriotism in his plays. One such example was his 1765 play 'The Siege of Calais'. Following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the French public longed for promotion of French patriotism and Belloy delivered, even though more iconic figures like Voltaire were pessimistic regarding such plays.

Boston, Massachusetts:: Janet Zweig, Photographic Resource Center,, 1985.. 20 unnumbered pages. Four color offset printing on Mohawk Superfine paper. Quarter-bound with illustrated paper over boards and cloth spine. Leaves are folded and glued at the spine to allow for a continuous image. Texts are excerpted from: Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg (dilemmas), The Moral Development of the Child by Jean Piaget (stories), In a Different Voice by Carol Gilligan (responses at intermission)". Janet Zweig: "This book combines the classic Punch and Judy text and overlays it illusionalistically with three layers of imagery: First, there are slips of paper with excerpts from studies of morality and gender by Lawrence Kohlberg, Jean Piaget, and Carol Gilligan. Next there are drawings in crayon, ink and other substances as if someone was marking directly on the book, and finally there is an overlay of a shadow play that falls on each entire spread.."

• Andria (The Girl from Andros)
• Hecyra (The Mother-in-Law)
