Philadephia: Lippincott 1934. First Edition. Interesting Association Copy of this Ford Madox Ford novel published only in the U.S. The recipient, Dr. Michael Lake (along with his wife Eileen Hall Lake), was the dedicatee of an earlier Ford novel (Return to Yesterday, 1931) and hosted Ford multiple times during Ford's later years living in America. Hall herself was a poet and friend of painter Janice Biala. In April 1930 Hall, Lake and Biala travelled to Paris together where they were invited to one of Ford's regular Thursday afternoon salons. While Biala was hoping to meet Ezra Pound, it was Ford she fell in love with, and they stayed together until Ford's death in 1939. Biala is a noted American abstract expressionist painter in the New York School whose art was collected by the Whitney, the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums (mostly in America and France). The inscription on this copy seems to be in Biala's hand, dated in the year of publication, and signed by both her and Ford. One signature starting at lower half, slight darkening around board edges, otherwise very good in an about very good, unclipped, slightly chipped and tanned dust wrapper with some slight rubbing and a few small edge tears.

Limited Edition this is #260 of 500. Though not called for, signed by Auster.
After graduating Columbia in 1970, Paul Auster moved to Paris where he earned a living working as a telephone operator for the Paris bureau of the New York Times and translating French poetry. While in Paris, Auster founded Living Hand, both a little magazine and a small, independent publishing house. Living Hand took its name from Keats ("This living hand, now warm and capable"). Eight issues of Living Hand were published, containing a great number of Auster's translations. This is issue # 7, a full length monolog of Selected Poems from Andre Du Bouchet, translated by Auster.
