Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

A fine and clean copy in an early fine binding of half green morocco. The spine has two raised bands, each with decorative gilt tooling. Tan title label, gilt. Gilt ruled box designs. There is an illustrated multi coloured leather onlay design to the middle of the spine showing a couple walking in the rain, under an umbrella. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Previous owners colour bookplate to the front paste down. A fine copy in a fine binding. The binding is unsigned but certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

One gathering slightly sprung. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt and black decorative band across the top of the front board and the top and bottom of the spine. Black decorative roll to the bottom of the front board. Title on gilt to the middle of the front board. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown. Illustrated with 60 hand-coloured plates (of which one is double-page), each with two pages of description, all edges gilt, octavo, in an unusual decorated calf binding, possibly late Victorian or early twentieth century, rather worn and marked but still very sound, later re-backed with a new morocco spine, the remains of the original spine laid down, endpapers retained but the free endpapers have been thickened and strengthened, new blank pages at front and rear. The plates are very fine, they are magnificently coloured and have great depth and luminosity, particularly in the foliage which is finely observed. Huge folio (13 x 17 inches) suite of ten superbly colored full-page illustrations loose, as issued, and a full-color illustrated title page by noted French illustrator Guy Arnoux. Original color pictorial folding covers with ribbon ties. Limited to 475 numbered copies (#218), printed on laid paper, watermarked. Each plate in very good condition, but contains remnants of plastic tape on verso of image not affecting images. Some minor marginal tearing of fragile paper. Binding spine sl. frayed and covers a little soiled. A remarkable survival. Printed on handmade paper watermarked, "Ingres, 1871." Exceedingly scarce and desirable graphic art by this exemplary French artist.

1687 1st ed Mabillon Museum Italicum Italian Voyages Paleography Illustrated
Jean Mabillon, a 17th-century French Benedictine monk, was tasked by King Louis XIV of France to venture on a tour of Italy in search of early Church history books to expand the royal library. The events of his journey and his findings along the way were published in a book entitled 'Museum Italicum seu Collectio'. This book was responsible for giving Mabillon the moniker of the 'father of paleography'.
