1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Signed by Author(s). Very good, red cloth over boards w gilt font on spine,HARD COVER, first edition/printing, xiii + 296 pps.w blk/white photos. Books is clean and tight but is underlined + symbolic notations in margins. Dust jacket is unclipped, slight curl at bottom edge, one repaired tear in verso, crease on flap and is now under protective mylar making a very acceptable appearance. The former book owner had a correspondence with the author, a handwritten letter by the author is included which clearly states his opinions he shared regarding some of the Friends support of some Nazi issues. This letter was written in response to an invitation (implied) to speak at a Friends' gathering. Hans A. Schmitt's compelling story describes American, British, and German Quakers' attempts to mitigate the suffering among not only victims of Nazism but Nazi sympathizers in Austria and Lithuania as well. With numerous poignant illustrations of the pressure and social cost involved in being a Quaker from 1933 to 1945, and reveals a facet of Nazi Germany that is entirely unknown to most people. The book is not signed by the author, but the full page handwritten letter is signed and the envelope used to send the letter is also attached. Also included is a postcard with the author's address and the NY Times 2001 obituary of Gerhart Riegne, the secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress from 1965 to 1983 and the person who sent the telegram which was the first official communication about the planned Holocaust. The book is very scarce, in very good condition and the addition of this letter makes this listing of special interest and very collectible.

Description:
xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
