In 1780, he began a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope with the Dutch East India Company. While there, he collected various specimens of animals and plants, and encountered local natives, the Hottentot people. These two volumes include views of the Hottentots and their villages, as well as birds, and large African mammals such as giraffes.
This first edition is famous for its inclusion of uncensored depictions of Hottentot men and women within the 12 full-page engravings.
