The elder Hills was an early graduate of the University of Utah's engineering department who worked for the US Surveyor General before meeting his death in 1905 at the age of 29 in a freak accident: he picked up a steel surveying tape which was in contact with a live wire bringing current to a disused mine and was instantly electrocuted. .
