London: Frederick Warne 292 pp, 8" H. Brick-coloured boards with gilt & black lettering, color illustration on spine, black lettering, black and color illustrations on front board. Yellow 'crackle' patterned endpapers, b&w illustrations. Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924), author of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', 'Sara Crewe', 'A Little Princess' and 'The Secret Garden', here recounts the story of her youth. Calling herself the 'Small Person', she describes her early life in Victorian era England, her family's journey to their new home in the United States in 1865, and concludes with the acceptance for publication of two of her first stories. Very small dent at top of contents page and opposite page - this migrates but diminishes into several adjacent pages, slight toning to pages, light browning to endpapers, small fore-edge tear on page leaf 71/72 - archivally taped, slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and a couple of tiny tears, faint foxing on bottom of text block, slight darkening to top of text block.. Heavy book may require extra postage unless posted within South Africa. No edition or date stated, c1893. Publication of 292 pages and 12 pages from Messrs. Frederick Warne and Company's Catalogue. There is bright gold gilt and decoration on the spine and on the front cover. Frontispiece in color. The boards are a little shelf rubbed and the edges are slightly frayed. There is foxing on the early and last few pages, little within the body of the book. The text is legible. The binding is excellent. In good condition considering the age of the book (c1893). GK.
