[Philadelphia: c1894]. Established as a small family business in 1830 building wooden clipper ships, Cramp's of Philadelphia transitioned into making iron warships during the Civil War, and by 1895 was the largest and most important shipyard in America, covering 32 acres and employing 6000 men. "[Cramp's] enhanced its reputation as the premier maker of modern ships in the naval program of 1890 with the construction of the battleships USS Indiana and USS Massachusetts, armored cruiser USS New York, and protected cruiser USS Columbia. Cramp-built vessels comprised three of the five capital ships that defeated the Spanish fleet in 1898 at Santiago de Cuba, an event that heralded America's emergence as a great power." (GlobalSecurity) The present work illustrates and describes the companys most important ships from the clipper ship Morning Light to the new American transatlantic passenger liners Saint Louis and Saint Paul, at the time the two most important commercial ships ever built in the Western…

London: Printed for Robert Clavell, 1694., 1694. 4to. pp. 51, [1]ad. disbound (outer leaves browned & some foxing). First Edition. Captain St. Lo. addressed the problem of naval administration in two pamphlets, England's Safety (1693) and England's Interest. In this 1694 tract he outlines a method whereby seamen on Men of War might be relieved yearly by merchant seamen. "For tis very obvious, that a great many Seamen.have shifted their Necks out of the Collar.getting into Merchants Service, only for the lucre of greater Pay, than is given to Fore-mast-men in Men of War; without any respect to the welfare of the Nation in general; receiving sometimes Fifty Shillings, and sometimes Three Pound, Four Pound, and Five Pound per Month; while most part of those on Board the King's Ships have not received above Three and Twenty shillings per Month during the whole War." London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd., 1940 [1941]. An important reference source for international maritime defence, this volume of particular interest in providing reliable visual and technical information for the worlds navies at the beginning of World War II. "For the first time since 1919, a War Loss section has been included in the prefatory pages. Though this cannot pretend to be exhaustive in the absence of complete information concerning enemy losses, every effort has been made to ensure its being as accurate as possible...the account given of the British Fleet is as complete as could possibly be expected in war-time. Illustrations of our latest type of aircraft carrier and of the light destroyer type known as the Hunt class
are amongst the items which we have been officially permitted to publish. A clearer plan of the new battleships of the class has been substituted for the somewhat sketchy one which was all that the authorities would allow to appear last year...In the United States…
